unity
Unity – What elements of the song are repeated or do
not change. What features continue to return. A unity question is usually all
concepts but they can be specific. Again, this is your change to show off.
Don’t spend a unity question saying that the tonality and tempo stays the same…
BORING! Find the exiting things that are always used or return and mention them
(syncopated patterns, notated rhythms, sequences, chord progressions etc…)
Make sure you set out this question under appropriate headings if it is all concepts!!!
Here is a short list of suggestions of ways that unity can be created:
Same tonality. Repeating melody or fragments of a melody even if it is in different instruments or registers. Repeating chord progressions. Arpeggios/broken chords. DRONES and Riffs (You should try and sketch any riffs) Walking bass line. SEQUENCES. Use of the same register. Sections using similar ranges.
Ostinato (notate it). Accent patterns (notate them) Note values that are features (swing, triplets, quavers, etc…) Tempo, Returning to a previous tempo, constant pulse, free rhythm etc…
