Repetition
Repetition was asked in the 2005 HSC so hopefully it
wont pop up again too soon. This is what I call a ‘separator’ question. Average
kids in the state will be able to complete simple ‘discuss the use of pitch’
questions because they can provide a list of that pitch elements of this piece.
This question asks you to link the use of musical concepts to the style and the
composer’s construction of the piece.
You should discuss this question on two levels
Like a unity and contrast you should link your discussion to the question. Any word or concept that is discussed should be discussed in terms of repletion. If you hear an OSTINATO Describe its note lengths, where it occurs in the song, how many times it repeats. Now to link to the question by stating that an ostinato is a repeating pattern that has *** features and is used in *** parts of the piece. (*** = I was too lazy to think of an example). This is a repeating feature of the music.
ALSO the HOW is repletion used element? Usually when something is repeated it creates UNITY. Or is the repletion used to reinforce a main melody or rhythmic idea. Is repletion used to create a minimalist feel with constant repeated ideas?
If in doubt link to the question. This question asks you to make judgments so form an opinion and back it up with your references to the concepts.
You should discuss this question on two levels
- BIG – Structure with repetitive features (Rondo A B A C A – The A section is repeated, sequences, dynamic or texture patterns)
- SMALL – Little things in each section that are repeated (Melodies or melodic fragments, rhythms or rhythm elements, accent patterns, tone colours etc…
